If Your Marketing Feels Random, It Probably Is

If Your Marketing Feels Random, It Probably Is

One of the most common things I hear from businesses is this: "We’re doing a bit of everything… but we’re not sure what’s actually working."

They’re posting on social media, running the occasional Google Ads campaign, sending a few emails, maybe updating their website here and there.

Individually, none of these are bad ideas. But together? It often feels disconnected.

Activity Isn’t the Same as Strategy

Marketing has never been more accessible. There are more tools, platforms, and “quick wins” than ever before.

But that’s also the problem.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing things because you feel like you should be doing them — not because they’re part of a clear plan.

Posting regularly. Trying ads. Sending a newsletter.

Without a strategy behind it, it quickly becomes reactive rather than purposeful.

What Random Marketing Looks Like
  • Changing direction every few weeks
  • Trying new platforms without fully committing to any
  • Inconsistent messaging across channels
  • No clear understanding of what success looks like
  • Decisions driven by trends rather than business goals

From the outside, it can look like “a lot is happening.” Behind the scenes, it often leads to frustration.

Why It Doesn’t Work

When marketing feels random, it’s difficult to build momentum.

You’re not giving anything enough time to work. You’re not learning from what you’re doing. And most importantly, you’re not guiding potential customers through a clear journey.

Marketing works best when everything connects — your website, your messaging, your content, your campaigns.

Without that connection, effort gets diluted.

What Changes When There’s Direction
  • You know who you’re targeting
  • Your messaging becomes consistent
  • Each channel has a purpose
  • You can measure what’s working
  • Decisions become more confident and less reactive

It’s not about doing more — it’s about doing the right things, in the right order.

Start With Clarity, Not Activity

Before adding another platform or campaign, it’s worth taking a step back and asking:

  • Who are we trying to reach?
  • What do we want them to do?
  • How does each part of our marketing support that?

Because once you have that clarity, everything else becomes easier — and far more effective.

The Bottom Line

If your marketing feels random, it probably isn’t a tools problem. It’s a direction problem.

And once that’s solved, the same activity can start delivering very different results.
